LARA KLAWIKOWSKI SS 2021 ‘inflorescence’ is a collection made from recycled plastics, upcycled rubber, and fabric waste collected by Rewoven, a Cape-based sustainability initiative that collects fabric off-cuts from CMTs around Cape Town, and sells the waste to designers and companies who recycle and upcycle.
The waste was combined and transformed into flexible, tactile, sculptural panels of material that mimic the detail and texture of flowers. Hence the name of the collection ‘inflorescence’, the botanical term for the flowering parts of a plant or the arrangement of flowers on a plant. Each panel in every design of this collection is hand-crafted at our studio, making each garment bespoke with its own idiosyncrasies.
Using unexpected and unusual materials for clothes sparks fascination, and prompts the wearer to look closer at what they are wearing. This fascination leads to more appreciation for clothes and a consciousness about what they are wearing and buying, a key factor in sustainable fashion design.
The designs were paired with shoes by Matsidiso, a heritage family run factory with 20 years in the shoe manufacturing industry. Their shoes are made from ethically sourced materials and hand-crafted by local artisan cobblers in Cape Town.
This collection was showcased at SAFW in Johannesburg.
