LARA KLAWIKOWSKI AW 2024 'Unearthed' is a collection created from handmade panels of upcycled material consisting of fabric off-cuts and recycled plastic. The fabric off-cuts used were purchased from Rewoven, a Cape Town based sustainability initiative that collects industry waste from the CMTs of big local fashion retailers.
Weekly, Rewoven collects colossal heaps of fabric off-cuts that reach the ceiling of their warehouse. Fabric shopping there feels like going on a dig, unearthing bits of fabric that can be transformed into something fashionable, beautiful and wearable at my studio.
The textile prints for the material panels were inspired by fallen leaves on a forest floor - nature's waste. Fallen leaves decompose naturally and are part of a natural recycling process. I wanted to mimic this process by re-using fabric off-cuts, recycling and upcycling them for new materials and new designs, and thereby diverting unnatural waste away from landfills.
This collection was showcased at Week of Fashion / SAMW in Cape Town.
