LARA KLAWIKOWSKI AW 2017 is a collection inspired by historical architecture in the Cape Town CBD – the detail in windows, doorways, staircases and the intricate mosaic floors of City Hall and surrounding buildings.
I became intrigued by the way urban Capetonian women dressed centuries ago, and imagined a contemporary interpretation, referencing the elements of historical urban Cape Town fashion and the architectural geometry of the city. I was inspired by the diverse cross-pollination of fashion and cultural influences in South Africa historically, that still exists today.
The collection employs various manipulated material surfaces creating artisanal fabrics, tactile woollen embroidery and appliqué, quilting, signature re-fabrication and delicate hand-woven tulle weaves. All materials used were uniquely re-fabricated and hand-woven at our studio in Woodstock, and combined to form structured, light-weight garments with refined textural details offering winter warmth without bulk.
This collection was showcased at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Cape Town 2017.
